About the Staff

NedgeFrog – Co-Founder

(art by Anyare)

Nedge discovered the furry fandom in 2011. They found the fandom to be a place that inspired exploration and freedom of identity and thinking of oneself in new ways, and here was where they felt most comfortable trying out they/them pronouns and identifying as first nonbinary in general, then agender more specifically. Since then, Nedge has been inspired by the intersection of gender and furry, and has been driven to foster safer spaces for trans and gender-diverse people in the fandom.

Serval – Co-Founder

(Art by Anyare)

Serval has been in the furry fandom for almost 40 years, and has helped around science-fiction and furry conventions off and on since then. Through Nedge, they have learned more intimately about identities and looked deep in themselves for their experiences in order to reshape their self-identity, finding themselves to be genderfluid and non-binary as the most fitting labels, at least for the moment. Conventions are also where they learned to stop worrying about appearances, and discovered a love of dancing as a form of performance, which has recently translated into entering furry dance battles and competitions. Also, he really, really likes chocolate – and sharing this passion.

Genderverse Furries: A History

Serval and Nedge found each other at WhatTheFur? in 2014, bonding over a shared love of chocolate and dancing. With Serval’s support, Nedge decided to host a trans and nonbinary discussion panel at Furnal Equinox the following year. It was wildly successful, and they decided to start a Telegram group with the panel attendees, which was also popular. This was the roots of Genderverse Furries.

The development of the group has not been without some problems. Nedge and Serval care deeply about supporting the members of the group, but their inexperience in creating community groups along with personal issues created some friction and several misunderstandings. From the start, many members have expressed deep gratitude about the group’s existence helping them discover or get comfortable with their identities, regarding the group as a chosen family. However, Nedge’s strong sense of justice did lack perspective at times, resulting in some rules being applied overly strictly, giving some members an unpleasant experience.

Taking all received feedback seriously, both Serval and Nedge have worked hard to identify and work on their issues. They have remained committed to continuing to create and maintain positive and affirming spaces for trans and gender-diverse furries, and thankfully, the ratio of positive feedback has been climbing steadily since 2017. In the meantime, Nedge and Serval have continued to work on evolving the group.

In 2016, Serval and Nedge decided to throw out the discussion group idea, which tends to get emotionally heavy and often activates traumatic memories. Thus, the Genderverse Furries Social was born, repeated at various conventions many times over the following ten years, always with highly positive feedback. Furries are invited to sit, colour in the Genderverse Furries activity books, post positive messages on the Messages of Positivity banner for others to read to brighten their day, or simply sit with each other and listen to music in a chill, affirming atmosphere. Everyone Nedge and Serval talk to always comment on the positive atmosphere of the room and offer thanks for providing a space where they can just relax and be themselves.

Serval and Nedge have been energized and buoyed by this success. This seemed to be something that the fandom wanted, and they wanted to set their sights higher. Nedge in particular has been dreaming of a whole convention run by and focused on trans and gender-diverse furries. So it’s finally happening! First, there were a few Mini-Cons in Ottawa and one in Toronto to gauge interest and help fundraise. Now, Genderverse Furries is taking the next big leap – our first full one-day convention!

It’s been a long road from where we started to where we are now. We know the road hasn’t been without its bumps and potholes. Those of you who have stuck with us, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Those of you who are just joining us, a wholehearted welcome! We are putting our all into Genderverse FurCon: Into the Genderverse and we sincerely hope you enjoy it!!
